Official launch of the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) Offender Art Gallery and Poetry Anthology

Minister Sibusiso Ndebele will deliver the keynote address at the official launch of the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) Offender Art Gallery and Poetry Anthology at the Goodwood Correctional Centre in the Western Cape on Monday, 27 May 2013.

The purpose of this landmark event, which forms part of the DCS “Arts Behind Bars” programme, is to showcase the rehabilitation of offenders, through the creative arts, to the South African community and the world.

A book entitled “Unchained”, consisting of poems by offenders, will also be distributed at the event.

The Offender Creative Arts Awards, which will be hosted at 18h00 on 27th May, will be attended by offenders from correctional centres across the country. The Arts Competition and Awards is one of the highlights of the Department, aimed at providing offenders an opportunity to compete at national level in different categories of Art. Through the competition, the individual, and group, talent of offenders is brought to the fore. Over the years, the importance of arts by offenders has been realized and the quality of art has also improved significantly. With the skills that they acquire inside correctional facilities, offenders are able to contribute positively to their communities and become economically active citizens.
