Verulam Trio Crime Unit bust alleged business robbers

Verulam SAPS Trio Crime Unit that was tasked to deal with three serious crimes in the area such as business robbery, house robbery and hijackings, made a breakthrough last night when they arrested four suspects within few hours after they allegedly committed business robbery at Verulam area. Cash and airtime vouchers taken during the robbery were recovered from the suspects. More arrests are expected to be made by the members. The suspects aged between 21 and 28 years are due to appear in the Verulam Magistrates’ Court on Monday facing business robbery charges.

On 3 January 2014 at approximately 13:40 a 34-year-old tuck-shop owner was working at his business at Waterloo area in Verulam busy serving his customers when he was approached by a group of suspects. One of them allegedly sprayed him with a pepper spray on his face and the others started to take goods such as cash, airtime vouchers and DVDs from the shop and fled the scene on foot. A case of business robbery was opened at Verulam police station for investigation. Verulam Trio Crime team took over investigation that led to the arrest of four suspects.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the members for their speedily arrest and recovery of stolen goods. The commitment shown by the members in apprehending wanted suspects within few hours after they allegedly committed crime is an indication of a zero tolerance during this festive season.
