Worker at office of Limpopo premier and two others arrested for petrol card fraud

PRETORIA -: Yesterday, Tuesday 28 January 2014, the Commercial Crimes Unit of the Hawks in Limpopo arrested three suspects in Polokwane for fraud and corruption.

The three suspects, two petrol attendants namely Freddy Mokonyama and Elias Thema, and a former employee at the Limpopo Premier’s office, Obedia Mamabolo, are accused of defrauding the premier’s office of R27 000,00.

The office of the Premier drew the Hawks’ attention to the allegations against the accused in October 2013.

The arrest was a result of a three-month intensive investigation by the Commercial Crime investigation team.

It is alleged that Mr Mamabolo colluded with the two petrol attendants by fraudulently issuing them with petrol cards from the premier’s office. The duo subsequently filled up vehicles’ petrol tanks in return for the equivalent cash, which the trio later shared.

The suspects appeared in the Polokwane Magistrates’ Court yesterday. They were each granted R500, 00 bail and the case was postponed to 10 March 2014 for further investigation.
