Donkey skins valued at R2.25m discovered at smallholding in the Brandvlei area, Randfontein.

Gauteng: Donkey skins with the estimated value of R2,250,000-00 was discovered at a smallholding in the Brandvlei area, Randfontein.

This discovery came after the Stocktheft and National Crime Intelligence units conducted a crime intelligence driven operation within the said area.

The police received a tip off about a smelly warehouse at portion 26 Brandvlei, both units acted upon the given information which led them to the discovery of a large number of animal skins stuffed in a store room.

During preliminary investigation it was established that the store room was leased to a foreign national who was not found at the premises. It is alleged that the donkeys could have been illegally slaughtered for their skins.

Two cases under section 6 and 7 of the Stock theft Act, Act 57 of 1959 and the meat safety Act, Act 40 of 2000 are being investigated.
