Peter Kirsten joins GKC team in South Peninsula

Gary Kirsten Cricket (GKC) has begun working with enthusiastic young cricketers from the South Peninsula school region for the very first time.

An exciting new addition to the GKC coaching team is the former national player, Peter Kirsten who linked up with GKC Academy Director, Ryan Van Niekerk to run a three-day coaching clinic in the region recently.

Over 70 boys from Sun Valley Primary as well as Fish Hoek Primary and Senior High School attended the camp.

“I am very pleased to be involved with Gary Kirsten Cricket,” Peter Kirsten beamed.

The former Uganda national team coach holds a Cricket South Africa Level Four license and is set to work alongside his brother, Gary for the first time since they batted together for the Proteas in the early 90’s.

Kirsten who is also a respected radio commentator will be involved in similar clinics as well as in the high-performance coaching space going forward.

“I am glad to be back in Cape Town and working with the GKC team. It was very encouraging to work with so many talented young players in this region and I believe there is lots to look forward to,” he added.

Van Niekerk shared Kirsten’s sentiments and is adamant that the venture has the potential to unearth talented cricketers. Cricket is a popular sport in the region with the likes of former Proteas spinner, Paul Harris developing his craft there as a youngster.

“It is with great pride that we have the opportunity to welcome Peter Kirsten to the GKC in Cape Town. We are extremely excited to tap into his vast knowledge of the game,” Van Niekerk said.

“Peter will be heading up one of our new coaching operations in the Sun Valley region of Cape Town at Fish Hoek High School. There is a huge amount of talent in this area. Peter is excited at the opportunity of working there and bringing his expertise as well,” he added.

“I am really excited to have my brother join our coaching team and look forward to him setting up our GKC partnership with Fish Hoek High and the South Peninsula,” Gary Kirsten said.

“We are hoping to reach out to as many young, talented players as possible at Fish Hoek High and South Peninsula region. It is an exciting time for us and we are really looking forward to getting busy with the work of coaching these players and helping them to be the best that they can be,” Gary Kirsten said.

Parent in Sport Evening

Adding to the GKC’s emerging footprint in the region Gary Kirsten is set to host a Parent in Sports evening at Fish Hoek High School on 11 August at 5:30 pm.

This is open to the public and will give parents the opportunity to meet Gary, Peter and the rest of the GKC family. It will shed light on the influence parents have on their kids and additional info on the new program that Peter will be heading up.
