Fixed and movable property is usually at high risk during festive season as criminals try to rob, break-in and steal valuable items out of vehicles, houses including business premises. Members of the public are encouraged to observe the following hints and tips during the festive season. Although this does not guarantee that you will be safe and full proof by observing these tips, but it can minimize the risk of break-ins, theft or robbery.
Leaving your house empty during festive season
- Ensure that the doors and gates are looked at all times and when you leave. Along with locking doors and window, try to make your house inaccessible to unauthorized entry by strengthening your garage doors fence, gates, windows and doors in order to also delay access to your belongings.
- If you are going to be away for a long time, consider leaving someone to look after your house.
- You can also request your relative or neighbours to help you switch on the lights in the evening and off during the day. Alternatively, install automatic time fitted lights to some of your lights in your house to make it appear as if the house is occupied.
- Consider fitting in an alarm system or install motion sensitive flood lights outdoors as they can deter burglars working at night. Burglar proofing can also be an option as they have proved in many cases to be effective deterrent to potential burglaries.
- If you leave your curtains open, be careful of what is in the view as it may lure opportunistic burglars.
- Having a dog may also be a deterrent. A barking dog can alert an entire block if something is awry
- Communities are advised to also conduct their own neighbourhood watches when they notice a suspicious activity, they must quickly report to the nearest police station.
- Communities must also notify/report at their nearest police stations when leaving their homes.
