The South African Weather Service has issued a warning of heavy rains in Gauteng and other parts of the country this week. According to the warning, this could lead to localised flooding in parts of Gauteng, the North West, parts of the Free State, Northern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.
Mutual & Federal recommends that our policyholders take precautions for the heavy rains and floods that are expected. “This will safeguard our policyholders and the general public as a whole while also assist in alleviating the damage to their property and belongings,” says Fourie Grobler, Head of Product Solutions at Mutual & Federal.
Mutual & Federal recommends the following guidelines to plan around weather incidences:
- With heavy rain and flooding, road conditions often deteriorate. Keep an eye out for potholes and be cautious as they are often hidden by water.
- When driving in the rain, drivers should increase their following distance by a minimum of three cars, driving speed should be decreased and the vehicle’s headlights and hazards should be turned on.
- Where possible, try to avoid driving, especially through flooded areas. However, should you need to, drive slowly and continually to avoid seizing your engine.
- Should you be stuck in a flash flood, move as quickly as possible to higher ground and remain there until assistance arrives.
- If your car is taking on water due to the flooding, do not open the door. Instead, climb through your window and head for safety.
Grobler adds: “We have always been consistent in implementing a contingency plan to deal with the influx of claims during certain high impact periods and will continue to do so. This is done at various customer touch points such as the Mutual & Federal Call Centre, our regional walk in centres or via our social network channels.”
“We can’t guarantee weather patterns or incidences, but where possible, following some suggested guidelines will go a long way in helping protect individuals and their belongings,” concludes Grobler.
