Easter holidays are fast approaching and it’s the time of the year to ensure you safeguard your property, especially if you are travelling. Criminals are aware and alert during this period, knowing that many homeowners will be travelling and leaving their homes unattended
Hannes Smith, Head of Personal Lines Sales & Operations at Mutual & Federal says that during these holiday periods, individuals should make sure that they use a checklist of security and insurance measures that they can complete before going on holiday.
“We urge all homeowners that will be away from home to take the necessary precautions before embarking on your holidays this Easter. A few simple checks and balances can ensure you do not come home to a burgled home, a burst geyser or any other incident,” Smith says.
Here are a few hints and tips if you are going away this Easter weekend:
- Make sure your alarm is tested and working;
- Ask friends or family to stay over at your home while you are away;
- Ask a neighbour to keep an eye on your home and to call you or your security company should anything suspicious take place;
- Make sure all your insurance premiums are up to date;
- Switch off your geysers, and water points i.e. your washing machine tap, if not in use while away;
- Make sure your goods are adequately insured so that your insurer does not reduce your claim because of being underinsured.
For those who will be spending their Easter holidays outdoors, Smith has the following tips:
- Ensure that your insurance policy covers your camping gear, such as tents and trailers
- Keep safe during your camping trip by carrying a fire bucket, fire extinguisher and fire blanket at all times
- Familiarise yourself with the campsite’s fire policy and location of extinguishers.
Smith concludes: “Most importantly, if you are driving a long distance, please stock up on liquids and snacks to keep you hydrated and filled up. If you are feeling tired, pull over at your nearest petrol station and take a good break before heading off again. Critically, you should also ensure that your vehicle is in working order by checking the brakes, wheel alignment and tyres to mention a few. Drive safely.”
