A strong cold front made landfall last night in Cape Town bringing much-needed rain as well as the possibility of hail, flash floods and gale force winds. Although the expected rainfall is a blessing for Cape Town and the wider Western Cape, Old Mutual Insure, previously (Mutual & Federal) would like to remind individuals to take the necessary precautions against the heavy rain and possible flooding as it could do a lot of damage.
Hannes Smith, Head of Personal Lines Sales & Operations at Old Mutual Insure recommends the following to help reduce damage caused by the extreme weather:
- With heavy rain and flooding, road conditions often deteriorate. Keep an eye out for potholes and be cautious as they are often hidden by water.
- When driving in the rain, increase your following distance to a minimum of three cars, reduce your driving speed and turn on your vehicle’s headlights and hazards.
- Where possible, try to avoid driving, especially through flooded areas. However, should you need to, drive slowly and cautiously to avoid seizing your engine.
- Should you be stuck in a flash flood, move as quickly as possible to higher ground and remain there until assistance arrives.
- If your car is filling up with water, do not open the door. Instead, climb through your window and head for safety.
- Take precautions around your home and keep your property well maintained by clearing your gutters of leaves and debris. This will also assist should you need to make a claim.
- Unplug all electronic devices, including cell phones, laptops and Wi-Fi routers to prevent serious damage to these devices should you experience lightning.
Following these guidelines will help you to stay safe and protect your belongings during the extreme weather expected over the next few days.
