KZNDOT teams up with Sanral to mentor Engineers

The KZN Department of Transport has elevated its youth mentorship programme for engineers which started in 2014 and has benefited at least 80 engineers.

This year, the Department has teamed up with the South African National Road Agency Limited (SANRAL) to ensure that its candidates get the best experience in the field.

Technology Transfer Centre Director Smangele Mngomezulu says that they have seconded six engineers to be placed as interns at SANRAL’s Technical Excellence Academy (TEA) since February 2019 for the period of 18 months in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape. She says the nature of engineering is very broad.

“We acknowledge that engineers in general are operating in a global space, so we can’t limit ours to the department only. The mentorship is for professionals specifically within the Built Environment and we decided to second engineers with less than 18 months of experience to join SANRAL,” says Mngomezulu.

The engineering graduates enrolled in the academy are provided with much needed training. This means that the TEA graduates are set to achieve training outcomes required by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) sooner than the candidates who have not been in such an empowering environment.

One of the beneficiaries of this mentorship is Nasiphi Ntengo (27) who holds a Bsc in Civil Engineering. She is very grateful for the opportunity presented to them by the department and SANRAL. Ntengo joined the department in August 2017.

“Growing up in a rural area at Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape, where there is little infrastructure is one of the factors that inspired me to study Civil Engineering. I told myself that one day I will design the roads for my neighbourhood. The experience has been good and for those willing to join this field should be willing to work hard and be dedicated to their work,” says Ntengo.
