Be Cautious around the braai and potjie fire!

It’s no secret that we South Africans LOVE to braai.

However, along with the enjoyable experience, there can be come some dangers.

Everyone operating a braai needs to understand how to switch off fuel supplies, quench or smother blazes and call the fire department.

The risks and hazards should not be underestimated.

•  Don’t braai in enclosed spaces. Make sure the open flame is away from thatch or any other structure or item that may catch alight if the wind changed direction and blows glowing embers about.
•  Always ensure the area where the braai is being used is well ventilated.
• As you are working with an open flame, make sure you have close to hand something to douse the fire if you need to… a bucket of sand, or a fire extinguisher.
•  Be careful when using accelerant or fire-starting liquid. There have been cases of severe injury – so stand well back, and keep children and other members of the party (and pets of course) well away.
•  Keep a squirt bottle of cold water handy to douse blazes in flare-ups and to control minor flames when the food catch alight.
•  Wear appropriate clothes without dangly bits that can catch fire or clothes that are very flammable.
