Business Break-In Suspect Arrested in Verulam

A 41 year old Indian male was arrested by Reaction Officers in Everest Heights -Verulam a short while ago.

Reaction Unit South Africa received a call on Monday morning from the owner of a canteen situated inside a factory in Missionlands – Verulam requesting assistance in apprehending the man. The caller explained that they had noticed stock and airtime had been stolen from the business over a period of time. When they reviewed the CCTV footage they noticed an Indian male in the canteen stealing biscuits, airtime and groceries.

The suspect was identified as a former security officer who was employed by the business. The victim could not explain how the suspect had gained entry into the business as no forced entry was used.

While on patrol on Olivine Road in Everest Heights today the suspect was spotted by a Reaction Officer. The Officer approached and apprehended the wanted man.

During an interview the Brindhaven resident admitted to duplicating a set of keys to the canteen while he was employed at the business. He went on to explain that he had stolen valuables from the business on four occasions since December 2016. The stolen goods were sold and the profits were used to purchase heroine which is his drug if choice.

When questioned in regards to the location of the keys the suspect informed Officers that he had thrown them into a drain. Reaction Officers escorted the suspect to Rosemary Drive in Brindhaven and recovered the keys inside a storm water drain.

The suspect was placed under arrest and has been detained at the Verulam SAPS.
