Attempted theft of motor vehicle suspect arrested in Verulam

18 year old Mxolisi Vezi who was arrested a short while ago for attempting to steal a motor vehicle at the Verulam Market.

Reaction Unit South Africa received the callout this morning from a passerby who noticed a man trying to apprehend the suspect. Reaction Officers arrived on scene a minutes later & found the suspect in an enclosed area of a wholesaler. He was placed under arrest & handcuffed. Two other suspects fled on foot prior to the Officers arriving on scene.

According to the 67 year old Parkgate resident, he had parked his 1995 model 160i silver Toyota Corolla on Wick Street – Verulam near the Market when three suspects attempted to open the left front window (picture 4). The suspects were in possession of tools to start the vehicle but fled when they were noticed. The arrested suspect removed his sandals at the scene (picture 7) and attempted to flee on foot.

The Cottonlands resident was released after the complainant declined to open a criminal case. The suspect picture is being circulated in the interest of the public.

In recent weeks RUSA has attended to eight Attempted Thefts & Thefts of Motor Vehicles in the same vicinity.
