From Bumpers to Boerewors: SAMBRA heats things pp in BASF’s Bok Pot challenge

The South African Motor Body Repairers’ Association (SAMBRA), a proud affiliate of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI), is delighted to support the innovative Bok Pot Challenge launched by BASF Coatings. This exciting new initiative blends South Africa’s cherished braai culture, love of rugby, and a spirit of friendly competition into one vibrant customer experience.

SAMBRA members were out in full force at the launch event, held at the Pretoria Country Club on 7 July, showing their culinary flair and community spirit. Among the competing teams were Senatla Panelbeaters, Saturn Autobody, Dino Panelbeaters, Extreme Autobody and German Motors – all proud SAMBRA members – who took on the challenge with enthusiasm and plenty of secret potjie spice.

The cook-off celebrates two things close to South Africans’ hearts – heritage and togetherness. It also marks the 100-year anniversary of Glasurit’s iconic mascot, Rudi the Macaw, while strengthening bonds between BASF and its loyal customers. The atmosphere on the day was one of camaraderie, creativity and shared celebration, with each team adding their own unique touch to this much-loved local dish.

Juan Hanekom, SAMBRA National Director, said he was thrilled to see members engaging in such a warm-hearted initiative.

“We always say our members are the best in the business when it comes to restoring vehicles – now it turns out they’re not bad with a potjie pot either!” he joked.
“This challenge is more than just a fun day out – it brings people together, builds relationships and reminds us that business is just as much about connection as it is about performance. We’re proud to support BASF in creating opportunities like this.”

SAMBRA extends a special congratulations to Saturn Autobody, who walked away as the winners of the Pretoria leg and now stand a chance to win an unforgettable trip to watch the Springboks take on Ireland in Europe later this year.

“The level of creativity, flavour and friendly competition on display was outstanding -we might need to add ‘Top Chef’ to our members’ list of credentials.”

According to Pieter Terblanche from Saturn Autobody, their winning recipe was inspired by the idea of bringing people together through bold, hearty flavours.

“Each team member shared their favourite potjie memories, and from there, we combined ideas until we created the perfect dish. Choosing who would cook was simple – the person with the most experience around the fire naturally took the lead, which was me,” he laughed. “But it was a full team effort. Everyone played a role in prepping, tasting, and fine-tuning the final dish.”

Despite strong competition on the day, Terblanche believes it was their teamwork and passion that gave them the winning edge.
“Every team member had a role, from managing the fire to adding ingredients at just the right time. Most importantly, we cooked with heart. The careful balance of flavours, our attention to detail, and the unity in our process really set us apart.”

Representing Saturn Autobody and SAMBRA in a community-driven event like this was a proud moment for the team. “It feels amazing! This gave us a chance to connect with people outside the workshop and showcase a different side of ourselves – passionate, committed, and fun-loving.”

Reflecting on the day, Terblanche said the experience was about much more than cooking. “The atmosphere was incredible – laughter, friendly competition, and the smell of potjies cooking everywhere. It reminded us how powerful teamwork can be when everyone is working towards a common goal.”
And if they go on to win the grand prize? “It would be a dream come true! We’d take that same team spirit with us to Europe – cheering for the Springboks, soaking up every moment, and coming back with even more inspiration for our next potjie adventure!”

The Bok Pot Challenge now heads to Johannesburg, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, with the grand finale scheduled for Cape Town on 16 August. The event is judged by none other than celebrity chef and Braai Master, Piet Marais, ensuring that taste, technique and teamwork remain central to this unique customer engagement initiative.

“From tools to tongs, SAMBRA members have proven that their skills extend far beyond the body shop floor – right into the heart of the potjie pot and we can’t wait to see how the competition progresses. Good luck to all,” concludes Hanekom.
