Firefighters extinguish a factory fire in Montegue Gardens
Last night we received a distress call of a factory fire in Montegue Gardens. We immediately dispatched multiple fire engines to the location. Upon arrival of the first crews, it was determined things were serious.
The fire was within a warehouse, high walls and the entire structure was ‘well lit,’ with businesses alongside under direct threat. Crews knew we had to get “on top of things,” and quick.
While making a start, they called for extra water tankers and one of our mighty ‘aerial platforms.’
As the aerial platform truck rolled in, it was linked to a water tanker and firefighters lifted high above the warehouse. Using the strong mounted turret, thousands of litres of water was directed into the inferno, to prevent it from spreading to the neighbouring factories.
From the ground, firefighters made their attack simulateously, from 6 different sides.
Their efforts prevailed. They were able to ensure that none of the surrounding businesses were affected. Dampening down efforts continued throughout the night until the morning first light.
While the fire was extinguished, we have always understood the importance of fire protection. The economic impact of a business being destroyed is huge and lasts long after the flames have been extinguished. As the province with the lowest level of unemployment, it is through efforts such as these, we retain that lead.
Our continuous investment into our Fire & Rescue service over the years has ensured when disaster strikes, we are ready. Having enough fire engines, enough water tankers and having these aerial platform appliances for making sure we keep Cape Town’s employment rate climbing higher than any other metro!
