Golden performances at the Old Mutual Wild Series Golden Gate Challenge

There were wildebeest, blesbok, antelope … and some very fast human beings seen bounding through the rugged Golden Gate Highlands National Park over the past three days.

The latter were the competitors in the Old Mutual Wild Series Golden Gate Challenge and the quickest of them all after the three-day trial run proved to be Eric Ngubane, who blazed through the course in 06:30:04.

The race was the final event in the 2016 Old Mutual Wild Series and proved to be a highly competitive affair, with Ngubane having to see off the challenge of Nomore Mandivengerei, who finished in 06:37:58. Third spot was taken by Solicitor Manduwa in a time of 06:56:21.

A commanding performance by Tracy Zunckel saw her take the honours in the women’s race in 08:31:10. Second went to newcomer Nonsikelelo Mbambo in 08:57:05, who squeaked in ahead of Carine Gagiano (08:57:25).

The race traversed through restricted parts of the reserve rarely seen by the public, including Little Serengeti, Cathedral Caves and many other hidden gems

All Wild Series events raise funds for endangered species and in this case it was the bearded vulture.

The conditions on Day One (27km) were windy and cool but good for running. There were, however, some slippery sections due to a torrential downpour the night before. On Day Two (29km) several runners spotted game on route, including wildebeest, blesbok and antelope. Day Three (17km) was short and quick … and the day finished with a celebratory champagne breakfast.

Karen Thomas, Old Mutual’s Head of Brand, congratulated all the participants and added: “The Old Mutual and Wild Series partnership is one that speaks to our core values. It is a privilege to be able to offer passionate athletes the opportunity to experience some of the most beautiful terrain this country has to offer. We have no doubt these events add to the well-being of our country and sustainability of our environment and are proud to be associated with them. Conserving our heritage remains a priority for our business.”

Dr Andrew Venter, CEO of conservation partner Wildlands, added: “Thank you to our title sponsor, Old Mutual for continuing to share our vision of bringing South Africans high octane endurance events, designed to test even the toughest athletes while raising funds and awareness of endangered species and habitats. It is evident from seeing the participants here this weekend that they enjoyed exclusive access to the Golden Gate National park. We hope that your experience was both memorable and exhilarating.
