Celebrating thirty years of service to the African retirement community

2017 sees the Institute of Retirement Funds Africa (IRFA) celebrate its 30 year of existence as a driving force in the South African and continental retirement sector.

The Institute will be celebrating this service at this years’ annual conference to be held at the ICC in Durban from the 10-12th September. The conference programme will hosts key topics on social development and best practices in the industry. The conference prgramme will feature speakers from government, the industry itself and social partners as well as views from international practitioners and theorists.

A key feature of the conference will be the handing over of Best Practice awards in governance, investment practices, stakeholder engagement, financial reporting, trustee development and financial reporting, sought after recognition judged by a panel of thought leaders and subject matter experts.

Wayne Hiller van Rensburg, the IRFA President, notes that members and the industry at large have delivered a clear mandate to IRFA as it moves forward in terms of support with understanding governance and tools to create and implement effective governance frameworks and to play an advocacy role representing the interests of pensions stakeholders.

Says Hiller van Rensburg “based on this feedback we have developed a conference programme that speaks to these needs.”

He cites planned seminars focused on providing delegates with tools and practices that will ensure that they are better equipped to deal with the day-to-day management of their funds, input from the South African government and various social partners as well as the Registrar of Pension Funds and the Pension Funds Adjudicator as well as a life-style speaker to address personal growth as an essential part of becoming a more effective participant in the pensions environment.

In addition, a birthday celebration on Monday evening will feature the highly acclaimed African Pop group Freshly Ground on the bill to entertain the delegates.

Hiller van Rensburg concludes, “This year’s conference theme is Social Development: Partnering for Change in recognition of the contribution the retirement industry makes to socio-economic development. We will also be recognizing the key role women play in the industry.”
