Clover Mama Afrika celebrates Madiba Day at the Shalate Drop-in Centre

Clover Mama Afrika, Clover’s CSI project, together with their valuable supplier MiX Telematics, a leading global provider of fleet and mobile asset management solutions, have once again showed their support by assisting a Clover Mama Afrika. This year, Mama Dorah Semenya, of Shalate Drop-in Centre in Seshego, Limpopo received funding for a valued site improvement as well as bread baking training, all of which will be celebrated during the Clover Mama Afrika Madiba Week event.

As part of the revamp, Mama Dorah’s carport which used to be uncovered, is now fully enclosed with a retaining wall, windows, a main door as well as secured with burglar bars, which means the children at her centre now have a warm, comfortable area to do their homework as well as enjoy a warm meal. The renovation is a result of a sponsorship she received for winning the MiX Telematics Madiba Week award, at Clover Mama Afrika’s Smarties Week* earlier this year in Mossel Bay – awarded for the incredible work that she does in her community.

Mama Dorah opened the Shalate Drop-in Centre in May 2006 as a result of the HIV and AIDS endemic that had left many children orphaned and vulnerable. Her centre currently provides a safe environment which feeds and cares for more than 120 children on a daily basis.

Mama Dorah says, “I will be forever grateful to Clover Mama Afrika and MiX Telematics for helping me with renovating my centre. The children will now be comfortable especially during the icy winters or scorching summers.”

Through her on-going training sessions at her centre, she has transferred skills to over 99 members of her community and currently provides employment to nine employees. She also has an outreach programme where she attends to 124 members.

Mama Dorah who is a teacher by profession uses her centre to put her knowledge into practice by helping the children at her centre with homework. Through her work she aims to instill the value of education to the children in her community as she believes that education is the key to a progressive society.

Professor Elain Vlok, manager for Clover’s Corporate Services and pillar of Clover Mama Afrika adds, “2018 marks the centenary of the birth of Nelson Mandela and what a great way to reflect on his life by empowering a formidable woman that improves the lives of children, something that was very close to his heart.”

“We have been a proud supporter of the Clover Mama Afrika programme for a number of years and it is great to see how this project continues to improve the lives of those people making a difference in the community – as well as of those reliant on such individuals. We are very proud to have again been in a position to provide the much-needed support to one of South Africa’s amazing women, and wish her ongoing success in the phenomenal work she is doing,” says Mariette Myburgh, Executive: HR and Transformation at MiX Telematics (Africa).

About Clover Mama Afrika

The Clover Mama Afrika project started as a humble project 14 years ago and has since developed into Clover’s flagship CSI programme. The project has to date appointed 42 Mamas throughout South Africa. These remarkable women collectively care for over 14 000 children and 2 500 elderly people, many of which are abused, orphaned, homeless and vulnerable.

Clover Mama Afrika empowers these Mamas with vital skills such as: cooking, baking, sewing, crocheting, business management, food gardening and bread baking skills. Over and above the training sessions these women are all supplied with the necessary tools, equipment, and infrastructure to create an income for themselves and give back to their communities.
