MedicalParamedics and Emergency Medical Response

ER24 and Discovery join forces in providing trauma counselling

Question:

I am a training coordinator and i need to arrange trauma counselling for employees that are exposed to road accident scene on daily basis.

Answer:

Thank you for taking an interest in ER24 and the topic of trauma counselling. Are any of your staff members on Discovery Health medical aid? If they are then we can provide them with trauma debriefing. We provide trauma support for Discovery Health members so even if only a few of your staff are on Discovery, we can still help the entire group of them.

Below is an idea of the service we provide:

ER24 has recently partnered with Discovery Health to introduce Discovery Trauma Support to give Discovery Health members and their families support and trauma counselling. Discovery Trauma Support provides a mobile, face-to-face and Telephonic counselling service 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

We provide trauma support to Discovery member’s and ER24 staff for the following:

.               Natural death

.               Unnatural death

.               Crime related incidents (hi jacking, armed robbery, shooting, stabbing)

.               Sexual assault

.               Attempted suicide

.               Past trauma

.               Domestic violence

.               Drowning

.               Hospital support

.               Death notifications

If a Discovery member has experienced any type of trauma then they may call 0860 999 911 (Discovery emergency line) to set up an appointment with a trauma support counsellor in their region. We have trauma counsellors in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town. If a Discovery member would like trauma counselling in one of the other regions then we are available for telephonic counselling. The first two sessions are free and if we feel, or the client feels, that they would like more long term professional help then we will refer them to Discovery Health to find an appropriate psychologist for them; it is important to note that if a Discovery member does decide to see a psychologist then they will be required to pay for this or it will come out of their medical savings.

We also provide trauma support and debriefing for ER24 staff members as it is vital in this industry.

If your staff members are not on Discovery then please let me know and I’ll see what I can arrange; or I’ll refer you to another organisation.

Thanks so much and have a great day!

Kind Regards,

Kerry Wheater
