Sandile Mkari, Discovery Sponsorship Manager celebrating with the Discovery Summer Champions for 2011, the Pholosho Primary School Team and coach

Pholosho Primary School from Alexandra walked off with top honours at this year’s Discovery Summer Cup 2011 when they outplayed 10 other teams from Alexandra-based schools in a gruelling five-a-side soccer tournament.

Held at the Discovery Soccer Park, the Summer Cup is in its second year and serves as preparation for next year’s Discovery Knock-Out Cup programme where under-9, -10, -11, -12, -13 and -14 teams that have made it through to the finals battle it out championship title at the Knock-Out Cup Finals. The programme involves about 120 schools in Johannesburg – all under the banner of the Discovery Johannesburg Primary School Soccer Programme.

Discovery Sponsorship Manager, Sandile Mkari, says all children’s soccer initiatives are aimed at promoting a healthy and active lifestyle amongst primary school children. “The programme supports Discovery’s key purpose, which is to encourage people to be healthier, thereby enhancing and protecting their lives,” he says.

Mr Kaya Ramahuma, who is the coach of the winning team and a teacher at Pholosho Primary School was elated at his team’s performance, “I am very proud of the boys. They worked very hard and it showed in there performance. I think we will do very will in the Discovery Knock Out cup next year”.

The soccer players played eight games each and enjoyed a day of healthy, active fun, with the support of family and friends, who cheered them on. In addition, they received goodie bags and a healthy meal provided by Discovery Vitality Partner, Nandos.

“Discovery is passionate about the development of South Africa through healthy promotional initiatives like sports. “It was wonderful to see children delighting in the facilities offered at Soccer Park, compared to the fields they normally have access to on a daily basis.” Concluded Mkari
