HAWKS arrest Northgate Mall armed robbery suspects

On 13 February 2014, two notorious robbery suspects appeared in the Roodepoort Regional court in connection with the armed robbery of Group Four Security (G4S) at the Northgate mall in September last year.

The suspects, Wiseman Mlangeni, 34 years of age and Sandile Dennis Ndaba, 31 years of age, were arrested by the West Rand Organised Crime Unit of the Hawks earlier this week.

During the arrest of Mlangeni in Braamfischerville near Dobsonville on Tuesday 11 February 2014, two unlicensed firearms (a 9mm and a rifle), 21 rounds of ammunitions and R103 500 of stained cash were confiscated. Both the cash and firearms were found hidden in his shack, wrapped in plastic.

During the arrest of Ndaba at Diepkloof Zone 4, a 9mm pistol and four rounds of ammunition were confiscated. The alleged robbers are locally known for terrorising the community with guns. One of them has confessed to the Hawks for his involvement in the robbery.

On 26 September 2013, a G4S security guard was shot minutes after collecting money from one of the biggest retail shops in the Northgate mall. A box full of cash was taken by four armed men who managed to flee. The security guard is still in a critical condition in hospital.

“We hope this arrest will bring some solace to the family of the security guard who was wounded by these robbers” said head of the Hawks in Gauteng, Major General Shadrack Sibiya.

The cases against the suspects were postponed until tomorrow, Friday 14 February for a formal bail application.
