Insurance Crime Bureau warms on theft of vehicles from auto body repair shops

Modus operandi: The suspects obtain detailed information of a specific vehicle at the Auto Body Repairer, including the amount outstanding that must be paid as excess. This amount is then paid into the account of the Auto Body Repairer and the suspects proceed to collect the vehicle “on behalf of the client” or have it delivered to “the address of the client”.
Action taken: We are currently aware of 9 instances thus far, 2 vehicles have so far been recovered and 3 arrests made.
To prevent this from happening to you, insist that service providers request and verify identification from the insured before handing over your vehicle.
