Volkswagen Race Day draws over 1200 runners!

Volkswagen 5km and 10km Run – Over 1200 runners

Saturday morning, 26 August saw over 1200 eager but cold running enthusiasts gather at the Volkswagen PeoplePavilion for the annual 5km Fun Run and 10km Run. The 5km and 10km race is fast becoming a highlight on the EP Running Calendar.  The 10km race saw runners starting at the PeoplePavilion, turning in Despatch, running a lap of the VW Test Track with the finish back at the PeoplePavilion. The shorter 5km Fun Run, had participants running from the PeoplePavilion, along Algoa Road, turning and finishing back at the PeoplePavilion.

Runners of all ages took part with the youngest registered runner being 14 years old and the oldest runner being 76.  The runners were from many different Clubs but with 54 runners, Despatch Athletics Club was the club with the most participants in Saturday’s race.

The winners in the 10km Men’s Race were:

1st         Melikhaya Frans from the Ikhamva Athletics Club in a time of 29 min 13 seconds

2nd        Zolani Ngqaqa from the Tinarha Athletics Club in a time of 30 min 52 seconds

3rd        Amos Nyongo from the Ikhamva Athletics Club in a time of 31 min 01 seconds

The winners in the 10km Women’s Race were:

1st         Ntombesintu Mfunzi from the Nedbank Athletics Club in a time of 37 min 02 seconds

2nd        Ndileka Mvakwendlu from the Tinarha Athletics Club in a time of 39 min 32 seconds

3rd        Luthando Nxanisa from the Madibaz Athletics Club in a time of 41 min 31 seconds

17-year-old Beata Langson won the Junior Women’s category in a time of 1hour 16 minutes and 19-year-old Xabiso Kobe won the Junior Men’s category in a time of 35 minutes 4 seconds.

In the Men’s 75-79 year category, 75-year-old Tamsanqa Jusayi won in a time of 47 minutes 7 seconds.  The Women’s 70-74 year category was won by 70-year-old Liz Jenkerson in a time of 55 minutes 24 seconds.

The VW Race Day was once again successfully hosted and organized by the VW Athletics Club and the 10km race is supported and endorsed by Eastern Province Athletics.
