KZN Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo commends nurses on International Nurses Day

KZN Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo has congratulated and thanked all hard-working nurses across the provinces, and wished them all the best as they commemorate International Nurses Day today (12 May 2018).

Held under the theme, Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Health Is A Human Right, International Nurses’ Day is celebrated worldwide on the 12th of May each year to commemorate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, who steered the movement of nursing to be recognised as a profession.

The Department is currently consolidating its plans to utilise the skills and expertise of retired nurses in a bid to improve the quality of healthcare service across the province.

MEC Dhlomo said: “I’m thrilled that this day comes soon after we had a very big ad fruitful meeting with retired nurses. We were reminding each other that we need those nurses… [to help take us] back to basics. They are the foundation and backbone of society in terms of health service delivery. Doctors, pharmacists come and go. Nurses stay eight hours with a patient and hand over to another nurse. It is extremely important to commend and respect the work done by our nurses. Happy International Nurses Day.”
