Tamaryn, a 23-year-old medical student from Paarl, Western Cape, won R3 million in prizes after clinching the Miss South Africa crown on 27 May 2018. She will also represent South Africa at the Miss Universe pageant at the end of the year.
The young beauty was discovered by modelling agency Boss, and started modelling to make extra money for her family. She entered pageants because they gave her a “voice and a platform where she could speak for people and inspire them”.
Tamaryn credits attending a public school for her down-to-earth demeanour: “I moved from Worcester to Paarl at the age of nine and life there was so eye-opening and different. Not everybody had clothes. Often the teacher would have more concerns with managing our overpopulated classrooms. But I did well in matric. I worked hard and was able to pursue my medical degree at the University of Cape Town,” she said.
Her message to young women across the country is simple: “I want every girl to try and embrace who they are. We are all different, and we should all just be comfortable in our skin.”
