MEC Kaunda participates in N2 road block & opens P58

The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Mxolisi Kaunda officially handed over a multi-million Rand infrastructure, P58 in the Umuziwabantu Local Municipality under the Ugu District Municipality, on the KZN south coast today.

The 24-kilometre road has been upgraded from gravel to blacktop at a cost of R267 million.

The road provides easy access to schools and clinics in the area.

Prior to the road opening, MEC Kaunda participated in a multi-disciplinary road block in Murchison along the N2.

He, together with Inkosi Mavundla, Inkosi Cele, Inkosi Duma, Umuziwabantu Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr D Nciki, Ugu District Deputy Mayor, Cllr PH Mthiyane and Umuziwabantu Deputy Mayor, Cllr N Nzigwa, also assessed the progress of the construction of P57, which the department is upgrading from gravel to blacktop road at an estimated cost of R256 million.

Since 2014, the Department of Transport has built about 400 kilometres of surfaced road infrastructure, 660 kilometres of gravel road linking various rural communities, 57 vehicular bridges and 27 pedestrian bridges.

“The delivery of this massive road infrastructure, particularly in rural areas is in line with the government’s objective of developing rural communities and linking them with areas of strategic economic activity in the province,” said Kaunda.
