Community given advice on radio about curbing stock theft in the Eastern Cape

Mthatha Communications conducted an awareness on stock theft at Unitra Community Radio where an hour slot was requested in order to give the communities tips in the curb against stock theft. Amongst others the following tips were mentioned:

– The communities were requested to not dump their stock whilst at the grazing field rather watch their stock

– When stock is stolen it should be reported to police immediately in order for us to activate all relevant stakeholders in following the leads

– The yards or kraals where the stock is kept should be secured

– Community members should work together in the fight against so it can be easily for them to raise alarm in assisting each other to prohibit the perpetrators to take away their stock

– they were advised not to resist in cases where their stock is taken during the night at gunpoint since one will not know how many suspects are out there but rather inform police when safe to do so

– They were also advised to brand their stock. Those who need to brand their stock should go to Stock Theft Unit offices where they will be issued with application forms and apply for their branding certificates to the Department of Agriculture

– After receiving their certificates one will be provided with a unique tattoo which will be bought where they buy their stock feeds

Questions and concerns were raised but responded to.
