One man behind bars as police launch a manhunt for his accomplices

PRETORIA – The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, General Khehla John Sitole has ordered the implementation of the 72-hour activation plan following a cross-pavement robbery at Brentwood Park Pick ‘n Pay in Kempton Park, earlier this week.

One suspect was arrested shortly after the robbery but an unknown number of suspects managed to evade arrest.

It is reported that on Tuesday as security guards were about to load money into the cash van, they were accosted by a group of suspects. The suspects held the security guards at gunpoint, abandoned their vehicle and fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of money.

Upon arrival at the scene, a shoot-out ensued between members of the SAPS and the suspects. A number of suspects fled the scene in different directions and police gave chase on foot. In pursuit of the suspects, police successfully apprehended one of the suspects who has already been positively linked to two other cases that include, being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of a hijacked motor vehicle.

On the scene of the crime, members recovered a white Opel Corsa utility vehicle. It was later found that the vehicle was reported hijacked in Linden, Johannesburg.

The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Khehla John Sitole has instructed the implementation of the 72-Hour Activation Plan to arrest the remaining suspects.

“We are calling on members of the community to come forward with information and not harbour any criminals in their homes. If anyone is found to be harbouring a criminal, they too will face the full might of the law. We have mobilised all resources to ensure that we apprehend these suspects, some of which are being linked to other CIT robberies,” concluded General Khehla Sitole – National Commissioner of the SAPS.

We appeal to anyone who has any information on the crime to contact the SAPS Crime Stop number 086 00 10111. Callers may remain anonymous and all information will be treated with the strictest confidence.
