What are the Popular used cars sold in South Africa?

What are the most popular used cars on sale in South Africa? AutoTrader published their research in late 2018 about the most sold second-hand cars in South Africa based on their data. This research was analysed through the search data from the AutoTrader website for the period April 2018 to December 2018.

The Volkswagen Polo comes in first place as the best-selling second-hand passenger vehicle in South Africa. It’s unsurprising that AutoTrader found the Volkswagen Polo to be the most popular used car in South Africa. The Polo is expected to do well as it is now at its 6th generation model, making it legendary within South Africa.

The Volkswagen Polo might be smaller than its sibling rivalry, the Golf, but offers the same great quality and looks inside and out. The Polo offers this at a more affordable and attractive price.

Coming in second place is the Hyundai i10, which is followed closely by the Kia Picanto. In fourth place is the Ford Figo with the Toyota Etios only coming in fifth place. Ford revitalised the look of the Figo last year, while Toyota ensures that the Etios comes with peace of mind and reliability making it quite popular to purchase second hand.

The Suzuki Swift finished in sixth place and close behind it in seventh place is the Nissan Micra, both of which are AutoTrader’s Car of the Year finalists for 2019. These two cars both competed in the all-new Urban Compact Car of the Year Category. The Suzuki Swift and the Nissan Micra were put through their paces on 11th and 12th March 2019. These two vehicles were judged by highly qualified jury members in intensive vehicle testing. The Suzuki Swift won this category thanks to its high-value pricing and high standard specification.

In the eighth, ninth and tenth places are the Honda Brio, Renault Kwid and the Datsun Go respectively. These are highly popular second-hand cars, as their price tags are extremely attractive.

Why are used cars so popular?

  • Used cars are usually more affordable than their new vehicle equivalents. You won’t pay nearly as much for a used car than a new car.
  • They should be thoroughly checked and certified roadworthy in most cases.
  • You can opt for different warranty options, or the vehicle might still have its balance on its warranty left if it’s not older than five years old.
  • The insurance may cost less, due to it being an older car and model.
  • The car may not lose value as quickly as when the car was new.

What to look out for when purchasing a used car?

  • Always do enough research when buying a used car.
  • Make sure that the vehicle does not have underlying issues.
  • Always look for the best resale price, make sure that the price isn’t too high or too low and that it corresponds with the mileage and year model of the car.
  • Get various quotes on insurance to get the best price.

You may be looking to buy an affordable used car, but have you considered getting affordable car insurance as well?
