Eight year old boy drowns in Emona

An eight-year-old boy has died while swimming in a dam in Emona – Tongaat.

Members of Reaction Unit, South Africa was called out to the area by residents reporting the incident. Upon arrival, it was established that the child was playing in the water when he began to experience difficulty and drowned. A girl who lives nearby discovered the body while she was collecting wood.

She proceeded back to her home and informed residents of her findings. Two men proceeded to the dam and recovered the child’s body.

It was also alleged that there were several other children swimming with the deceased however no other children from the area have been reported missing. The dam appears to be an excavation site which filled with water following the heavy rains experienced in Durban this week.

The identity of the deceased has been established. Police are investigating further.
