Criminals target barns with seed and fertilizer

Farmers need to make sure their barns are adequately secured, because criminals are now targeting farms where seed and fertilizer are stored.

According to Free State Agriculture’s (FSA) information, large quantities of seed have already been stolen in the vicinity of Bothaville, Ventersburg and Marquard.

“In one case in December, workers were tied up and robbed of nearly 360 bags of seed,” said Dr Jane Buys, Safety and Risk Analyst at FSA.

According to her, farmers need to make sure their barns are secured by possibly having “an alarm and/or camera system in place so that movement can be detected and picked up early”.

Farmers are also requested to provide any information on possible suspicious vehicles and people to their Safety Representatives, so that it can be given through to FSA’s Safety Desk to combat crime.

Buys says it appears that the stealing of seed and fertilizer usually occurs at night and that vehicles, bakkies or trucks are being used.
