Carjacking suspect in court

DURBAN – The Durban Central Task Team embarked on an operation yesterday afternoon, 09 March 2020 at 14:00, following information about suspects involved in a carjacking case. The vehicle was spotted on Prince Alfred Street and the driver was approached. He was then placed under arrest for possession of the suspected stolen property. The hijacked vehicle was also confiscated by police and taken to the police pound for further investigation. A 26-year-old suspect is appearing today in the Durban Magistrates’ Court.

His arrest came after an incident on 20 February 2020 at 13:30 where the victim was at business premises on Mona Road loading a vehicle to the carrier of the truck. Whilst he was busy loading the vehicle, he was approached by two armed suspects demanding the vehicle. They took the vehicle and drove off with an Audi A5. A case of carjacking is being investigated by Point SAPS.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula commended the police for the arrest. “Such crimes cannot be tolerated and we will continue to fight criminal activities in the province. The suspect will be profiled to ascertain if he can be linked to similar cases,” he said.
