Preventative measures to curb spread of Coronavirus discussed

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Bheki Ntuli, together with MEC for Health, Ms Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu, today, 19/03/2020, engaged with the provincial leadership of the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) as part of an aggressive information drive to create awareness and promote preventative measures to curb the spread of Coronavirus (Covid-19) infections.

The partnership with SANTACO will enable Government to, among other efforts, interact directly with commuters at taxi ranks; and to also utilise taxis as a mode to disseminate important messages. These messages will unpack what Coronavirus is; how it can be prevented; its symptoms; how they can be prevented; and what those who exhibit these symptoms need to do.

The meeting also deliberated on approaches to be taken to ensure the availability of hand sanitisers at taxi ranks.

There are 50 000 taxis operating in KwaZulu-Natal and as such, educational campaigns will be conducted in a staggered manner at taxi ranks to ensure maximum reach. Extensive educational campaigns will be rolled-out across all districts in the province.

MEC Ntuli and MEC Simelane-Zulu commended the proactive preventative interventions taken by SANTACO to educate commuters about the importance of reducing the spread of the Coronavirus.
