Top factors to consider when choosing a university

Matrics of 2020 are currently faced with a big life decision – choosing which universities to apply to. To make an informed decision, learners and their parents are advised to research different universities by not only considering courses and entry requirements but also taking into account other factors, such as location and facilities.

Jo-Ann Daniels, Deputy Director: Student Recruitment at Nelson Mandela University, says that choosing the right university is not one prospective students should take lightly. “You will spend a lot of time on campus and become part of a new community, so it’s important that the university you go to suits your circumstances as well as your personality.”

Study fields and programmes

First and foremost you want to go to a university that offers a study field that you are interested in. For prospective students with a particular career in mind, such as medicine or law, finding a suitable course and university should be fairly straightforward. However, if you’re torn between different options, make use of the career guidance services offered by universities.

“We offer 481 undergraduate programmes, spanning over 130 different career fields, at Nelson Mandela University. We know this can be overwhelming, which is why our student recruitment specialists are on call to assist learners and their parents to decide on the most suitable programme,” says Daniels.

Location, location, location

This is probably the first time you’re considering living away from home, which makes the distance between the university and your home a key factor to think about. Will you manage living far away from your family? You’ll be spending a great deal of your time on campus, however, your off-campus life is just as important. Do you want to live somewhere quiet, more personal and park-like or does big, busy city-living appeal to you?

“Nelson Mandela University campuses are situated in Port Elizabeth and George, which give you the advantages of city living in a friendly environment. Our campuses are close to beaches or mountains and forests, with our South Campus on a private nature reserve and our George Campus located at the foot of the Outeniqua Mountains. These beautiful natural surroundings are a great lifestyle choice for our students, who come from all over the world,” Daniels explains.

University facilities

Access to amenities like libraries, computer laboratories and student learning centres is important to ensure that students have the best chance to succeed during their time at university, while coffee shops, cafeterias and food courts provide students with places to eat and socialise.

According to Daniels, “Not only do we have state-of-the art buildings, a solar power plant, well-equipped laboratories, computer labs, study centres, lecture halls, libraries and WiFi access, but we also provide counselling and health services to support our students during their academic and personal journey with us. The university also accommodates people with disabilities.”

The application process

There are many factors to take note of before applying to a university and it’s key that you understand what is needed before submitting your application. Check the application closing date and ensure that you meet the minimum statutory entry requirements in order to be considered by the university. When you submit your application form, you will need to simultaneously include all the relevant supporting documents. Certain programmes also require that you attend an interview, and you may be asked to present a portfolio of your work. It’s essential that you know exactly what the university requires from you, before submitting your application.

“We understand that this is a hard decision for prospective students, which is why Nelson Mandela University provides a range of services to support and guide those considering studying for the first time. From student recruitment specialists to Emtonjeni – our student wellness service – we are here to answer any questions and assist any prospective students with the information they need to apply to study at our university,” says Daniels.

Choosing the right university is a big decision and it’s not one you should make lightly. Take your time and consider every single option and what best suits you. Weigh your offers carefully, talk to friends and family members, and think long and hard about where you see yourself studying before making this important decision about your future.
