Speedy police response after tip-off leads to the arrest of two business robbers and deaths of 2 others

When a shop owner received information that six male suspects were planning to rob him at his shop during the afternoon, he wasted no time and informed the police. Maphumulo police proceeded to the shop yesterday and held a stakeout at the business premises at Ekunqobeni area. At 17:20, they spotted two armed suspects entering the shop. The suspects pointed the shop owner with a firearm, demanded cash and threatened to bury him alive if he does comply with the instruction.

The police intervened and a shootout ensued. During the shootout the suspects aged between 30 and 35, were fatally wounded. Two unlicensed firearms belonging to the deceased suspects were seized inside the shop. The police spotted another three suspects in hiding outside the shop.

Two suspects aged 24 and 30 were arrested and one managed to flee the scene. The arrested suspects were found in possession of an unlicensed pistol firearm. Charges of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and an inquest are being investigated by Maphumulo police. The arrested suspects will appear before the Maphumulo Magistrate’s Court soon.
