Resident locks his family in bedroom during housebreaking in Tongaat

A resident of Watsonia Drive in Watsonia, Tongaat locked his family in a bedroom and contacted the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Tongaat Operations Centre for assistance after he heard suspects breaking a window and forcing their way into his home during the early parts of this morning (Wednesday).
Reaction Officers were dispatched to the property at approximately 03:01 and on arrival saw two suspects fleeing into a bush at the rear of the home. Officers pursued the suspects into the bush however they managed to evade arrest and fled with two laptops, a 55” LG TV, jewellery and cash from one of the victim’s wallets. Reaction Officers recovered some jewellery and other household items in the bush during their search for the robbers.
The victim explained that when he heard a window break he noticed that suspects were forcing a burglar bar in. He rounded up his two daughters, son and his wife and locked themselves up in one of the bedrooms. He then contacted RUSA for assistance.
After gaining entry into the home the suspects began stealing valuables. It could not be confirmed as to how many suspects were involved. It is believed that the robbers had a getaway vehicle parked in the vicinity however this could not be confirmed.
The family were not injured.
