MedicalParamedics and Emergency Medical Response

Post-flood training exercises held by first responders in KZN

On Thursday night the 23rd of June, S.T.A.R.T teams met for a real-life scenario training exercise.

The training was set to utilise the full strength of S.T.A.R.T rescue which incorporated our K9, medical response, 4×4 and high-angle teams.

Teams met at 6pm where they were briefed on the scenario set-up. The training was completed in a real-life conditions with poor lighting and dropping temperatures. The exercise was set up as a post-flood training exercise which simulated a vehicle which had been washed off a bridge with two occupants missing.

Shortly after the brief, the teams kitted up and prepared themselves for a full search and rescue.

The search was conducted by the K9 teams who found the missing victims. The teams discovered that the victims had sustained severe traumatic injuries and communicated their findings to the JOC, who then activated our medical and high-angle teams. These teams worked together taking control of the incident, centralising the patients to render medical treatment and high-angle rescue.

Training sessions like these are vital to the organisation’s success and keep members prepared for a “worst-case” scenario.

A full complement of medical, search and rescue members and personnel which included two of our team doctors and an advanced life support paramedic attended the training session. Our K9 teams searched using qualified members as well as new members in training.
