Suspects arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition and suspected stolen property

Four male suspects between the ages of 24 and 37 years were arrested by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Public Order Policing Unit for possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition and suspected stolen property in Kensington, Johannesburg.

On Sunday morning, 29 January 2023, whilst conducting a routine roadside check at Roberts Avenue and Collingwood Street, the officers noticed and stopped a suspicious silver Volkswagen Polo Vivo with four male occupants.

Upon stopping the vehicle, the officers searched it and the occupants, and recovered two unlicensed firearms, which include a Norinco 9mm pistol with 8 rounds and a CZ 9mm pistol with 19 rounds.

Additionally, the officers found two sets of number plates and two backpacks containing clothes and sneakers.

The officers conducted an inquiry into the number plates using the eNatis system and it was found that one of the number plates belong to a BMW 3 series which is sought for being used in the commission of a crime as per the Benoni SAPS case.

All four suspects were arrested and detained at Jeppe SAPS where a case docket was opened for further investigation.
