DP World & the DP World Lions expand female youth sports development programme

DP World, in partnership with the DP World Lions, is proud to announce the capping of the second intake of 20 young women sports coaches in the provincial team’s physical education coaching training programme.

The programme, which was launched earlier this year, identifies energetic and motivated young women from within the DP World Lions’ network, training and certifying them in physical education to enable them to work in schools as physical education coaches.

“South African women’s sport is currently experiencing incredible success. Training programmes that focus on women being able to seek sustainable employment in the sporting arena are a critical part of the foundation that women’s sport requires to succeed and grow,” says Esha Mansingh, Head of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability for sub-Saharan Africa at DP World. “The empowerment of women, particularly in sport, is an important focus for DP World, and we are excited that we have successfully scaled this programme so soon after its launch, giving another 20 young women the opportunity to be part of the sporting community in Africa,” continues Mansingh.

Three of the young women who participated in the first round of the programme have already been approached by schools for permanent employment, with temporary positions sourced for the rest of the first intake.

The young women who participated in the second intake were identified through various sporting institutions, social media and the DP World Lions network, and include five women from Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University in Ga Rankuwa, Gauteng.

“As we celebrate sporting victories for women in South Africa and around the world this month, we are proud to help build a better future together through sport, which has the power to inspire and motivate. Through strategic partnerships and committed execution, we are making a real difference in the communities in which we operate, adds Mansingh.

Lions Cricket CEO, Jono Leaf-Wright, concludes: “We are extremely proud of and grateful for this programme and the genuine difference it’s making in the lives of young women who are fully deserving of such opportunities. Lions Cricket would like to thank DP World for the caring approach taken to empowering our ladies both inside and outside of the sporting landscape.”
