To use my petrol card or my credit card.. Does it matter?

Some vehicle owners, after publishing a recent article on Preventing fuel card fraud, stated that having a fuel card is merely to “show off” ?

We asked Absa for some responses about the value of using, for an individual vehicle owner or small business owner with one vehicle, a petrol card instead of just his credit card.

Is it not safer to use the credit card with pin protection?

Yes, purchase protection applicable to Credit Card transactions only (this is applicable to certain goods)

What are the differences in banking charges between using a petrol card versus a credit card?

 Petrol Card (Consumer Credit Card):

    • Transaction Fee charged per transaction done via Garage Card
    • Interest from day one, due to no interchange charged on Garage Card transactions
    • Not included as part of the Rewards Program

Credit Card:

    • No transaction fees
    • Interest free period – 55 days (Commercial) / 57 days (Consumer)
    • Included as part of the Rewards Program (Consumer – where customers are registered for Rewards)

Would there be any additional value such as loyalty programmes, reporting tools for tax purposes or ease of use to using a petrol card or why should we use a petrol card?

No special benefit for using the Garage Card plastic (refer to the above-mentioned)
