During October 2016 ER24 (ambulance service) reported that two of their paramedics were robbed of their money and cell phones in broad daylight at the Howick Falls. With the upcoming holiday season this is certainly not something that one wants to think about, but it is a reality of our times. The question arises whether it is still safe to visit many of our tourist attractions?  Consequently, here are a few tips to consider:

  • Don’t alight from your vehicle at a place that looks suspect.
  • Only get out if there are other visitors in the area, therefore avoid quiet times.
  • Be on the lookout for suspect people. Don’t engage in conversation with just anyone.
  • Ensure that your vehicle is locked when leaving it and don’t leave your possessions visible.
  • Always walk in a group of two or more.
  • Put the CrisisOnCall emergency number (0800 101 911) on speed dial so that you can react faster in an emergency.
  • Beware of informal traders. They often distract you while their accomplices do the stealing. Stay alert at all times.
  • Should you have children with you, ensure that they do not wander off or run around. While distracting children increase the opportunity for criminals to take a chance, the environment can also be dangerous for children.

Always read the warning signs erected at tourist sites and obey the directions thereon.
