Calling all photographers for a chance to get your work noticed and win up to R50 000 worth of prizes

Messe Frankfurt South Africa, organisers of the all new Photo & Video Experience, have just launched their official 2019 Photo of the Year competition. The competition is set to coincide with the event taking place at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit from 26-28 July 2019.

Comprising of 6 different categories, the photo of the year competition is aimed at all imaging enthusiasts, from the hobbyist to the professional photographer, with an exclusive category for smartphone images. This way entrants don’t have to own a camera to get their work noticed.

“Photographic competitions have always seemed like something best left to the professionals, but with the increased technology and convenience of smartphones, we simply cannot ignore the growing popularity of smartphone photography,” says Stephen Segal, professional photographer and Show Director for the Photo & Video Experience.

The 6 categories of the Photo of the Year competition are Wildlife, Nature, Fashion, Wedding, Creative and an open category for images taken with a smartphone. The open category is not limited to any subject. Participants can submit up to 4 images per category. Three finalists will be selected and their work showcased at the 2019 Photo & Video Experience. The 6 category winners will be announced at the show.

The Photo & Video Experience features leading industry suppliers such as Canon, Godox, Outdoorphoto, Broadcast Lighting, Fujifilm and GoPro, to name a few. This gives visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in an experiential world of interactive zones. From live fashion shows by internationally renowned Fashion Designer, David Tlale, as well as creative, lighting, videography and green screen zones. Lamborghini recently came onboard as the official track sponsor of the event, allowing action photographers to put their skills to the test alongside the dynamic Kyalami track.

“The Photo & Video Experience is about bringing together anyone and everyone interested in photography. We are pleased to incorporate a competition that is inclusive of all imaging enthusiasts,” says Melissa Bender, Head of Marketing at Messe Frankfurt South Africa. “We are really excited to launch this competition and be part of a platform that promotes good photographic work,” she adds.

The competition will run until 5 July and judging will be done independently by the Photographic Society of South Africa (PSSA). Winning images will be credited to the photographer and incorporated into future marketing campaigns for the event.

“Photography is such a powerful medium, and we are confident that we will see some amazing work on display at the show,” Segal adds. “We also plan to expand the competition in 2020 to incorporate videography as it is such an important part of our show,” he concludes.
