House destroyed in a fire in Redcliffe

A 51-year-old woman’s home was destroyed in a fire on Hazelmere Drive in Redcliffe – Verulam.

Members of Reaction Unit South Africa were called out to the home after receiving several calls from the public requesting assistance. Upon arrival, it was found that one section on the upper level of the home was on fire. The roof had already collapsed. The Ethekwini Fire & Rescue Services are currently on scene and are battling the blaze which began to spread to other parts of the house.

According to the victim, she was conducting chores in the yard when she called for her two-year-old grandson who was inside the home. Shortly after the child walked down the stairs she noticed smoke billowing out of her front door. With the assistance of neighbours, the grandmother managed to remove most of her valuables until the roof began to cave in.

The cause of the fire has not been established at this stage.
