Turning 16 learners into insurance leaders

Johannesburg – Over 260 hopeful applicants from the Vosloorus and Orange Farm areas in Gauteng applied for the 12-month Legends In Training (LIT) qualification programme in June 2019. In September, the career dreams of the final 16 will come true.

On 23 July, 60 shortlisted candidates were invited to the Parktonian Hotel by Constantia Insurance Company, where they were met by members of the LIT Team. Constantia launched the LIT initiative through collaboration with LCJ Group, the National Community Radio Forum (NCRF), local radio stations ThethaFM and KasieFM, and the Graduate Institute of Financial Sciences (GIFS).

The candidates were welcomed and given an opportunity to introduce themselves before being split into groups. They were tasked with putting together a presentation focused on insurance that would be presented back to a judging panel by candidates who made it through to the next round. After a full day of one-on-one interviews, 30 candidates were selected for the second round which would take place two days later.

On 25 July, candidates were invited to the Constantia offices in Bryanston, where they met Volker von Widdern, CEO at Constantia Insurance Company, and Motseki Majake, General Manager at Constantia Insurance Company. After welcoming the learners, both von Widdern and Majake shared a few anecdotes about their insurance careers.

“We live our lives through stories and I’d like to share my story about opportunities with you today,” began Majake. “It was only in matric that the reality of my future set in and I started to think about what I was going to do after school. My maths teacher said to me ‘I’ll work with you to be successful’ and I took this opportunity and began taking my subjects seriously. I ended up as the CEO of an insurance company, with four degrees. Just like my teacher, Constantia is giving you an opportunity today and it’s up to you how you take this to the next level. It’s going to be hard but if you are serious, focused and grab the opportunity with both hands, this programme will change your life.”

During the rigorous final day of interviews, candidates were also judged on their presentations. Five exceptional learners were identified during the course of the day and were given Golden Tickets, guaranteeing them an immediate place in the final 16. By close of day, the remaining 11 successful candidates would be selected for the LIT programme.

The 12-month LIT qualification programme begins in September and will equip these young South Africans with valuable skills and an essential foundation in insurance, helping them kick-start their careers and giving them the opportunity to become insurance leaders.
