Hilarious holiday insurance stories

Going on holiday is supposed to be a time of relaxation, family bonding, making memories, having adventures, and whatever else you fancy. It’s not meant to be a time when you should have to put in an insurance claim, like these poor souls… We’ve gathered a list of hilarious (although unfortunate) insurance claims that will put a smile on your dial.

Here’s our top hilarious holiday insurance stories for you to laugh at.

The falling coconuts

In 1984, Dr Peter Brass published ‘Injury Due to Falling Coconut’, which turned out to be a not-so-well researched study. Apparently word got out about his study and holiday-makers became more afraid of falling fruit on the beach than man-eating sharks in the sea. The British travel company, Club Direct, actually started encouraging people to take out ‘injury by falling coconut insurance’.

The Spanish haircut

After what can only be described as the ‘lawn mower’ approach to haircuts, a teenage girl got so upset that her dad tried to file a travel insurance claim for the haircut she got while on holiday in Spain because she ruined their family time together.

The lippy cows

Travellers were on holiday in the countryside, stopped to take in the view, and a herd of cows decided that they absolutely had to taste the car. After a few licks, they’d damaged the paintwork which the holidaymakers put a claim in for.

The classic bikini distraction

A young British lad on holiday in Athens walked into a bus shelter (like something out of a Mr Bean movie) because he was so distracted by the sight of a group of bikini-clad girls. He put in a claim for his busted nose, but couldn’t claim for his dented pride.

The overboard teeth

A pensioner went on a cruise and accidentally lost his teeth overboard, so he put in a claim for ‘lost baggage’. Maybe he was practicing the Titanic move off the front of the ship and smiled a bit too widely at his own whimsy?

The broken heart

There was an Australian woman who wanted compensation because she went to France and got her heart broken. Alas, her insurance company refused to pay up, which just seems like salt in the wound of her heart.

The buried camera

There’s a bunch of ways to lose your holiday camera, but perhaps the most frustrating (and funny if it didn’t happen to you) is when your kids decide to use it as buried treasure while you’re on the beach. Unfortunately the kids couldn’t remember where they buried it and the parents had to put in a claim for lost property.

Right, so this list of strange holiday claims is meant to put a smile on your face as you gear up towards the end of the year and go on your own holiday. But it also gives us a chance to tell you that insurance really is something to consider when you’re going on holiday. We’re specifically thinking about home insurance to cover your house while you’re away and car insurance in case something happens while you’re on the road. That kind of thing. This way, if disaster does strike, then you can put in a claim and not have to shoulder the financial burden all on your own.

Worried about adding expenses to your budget just as you’re saving for your time off? Well then why not get in touch with an insurer who offers super cheap home and car insurance? Their car insurance actually decreases every month in line with the depreciating value of your car so that you pay less as the months go by. No catch, just savings.
