OneSpark fights for equal opportunity this women’s month

Lack of access to menstrual health management continues to be a barrier to success for many young South African girls. The reality, is that many young South African women do not have access to basic female hygiene which prevents them from being able to attend school and achieve their full potential. In South Africa, it is estimated that about 3.7 million girls are unable to afford sanitary pads, with an estimated 30% of learners missing school because they are on their periods; a frightening statistic for a country with an already battered education system post-covid*.

Creating equal opportunities for all, is one of the reasons OneSpark, a globally backed InsurTech start-up that’s shaking up the insurance industry, was founded by Josh Kaplan & Greg Smith.

To do their part this women’s month OneSpark has donated over R10 000 worth of sanitary pads to Mama Flo SA, an NPO who is doing unbelievable work to help fight period poverty and empower young women to be the best versions of themselves.  Mama Flo provides short and long term sustainable solutions to fighting Period Poverty in Johannesburg & Cape Town.

“ We are so grateful to OneSpark for coming on board and taking a stand against period poverty. We know this partnership is going to make the world of a difference to the women and young girls we work with. Empowering women and girls is one of our core values, and it’s through individuals and companies such as OneSpark that are standing up and standing with us to help make real and effective change. A massive thank you to the whole team at OneSpark, and we are so excited to see what the future holds.” Says Melissa Zackon, Founder of Mama Flo

Mama Flo is doing incredible work, providing the support and resources these young women need to achieve their full potential. Our country has unbound possibilities if we work together to ensure that no child has any barriers or obstacles to obtaining an education. That’s why we’re supporting this initiative, and that’s why we started OneSpark. We want to give all South Africans, particularly our youth and future leaders equal opportunity to succeed. Our University Wallet Plan, for example, was designed to do just this. It protects a child’s education if something happens to their parents, and provides a R250 000 cashback if their parents don’t claim and keep their policy active, which they can use to help pay for their university education. To rise as a country, we must rise together and lift up those who can’t do it for themselves. Only together can we create the vision that Madiba laid out for our beautiful country. We urge all South Africans to fight period poverty together, to help ensure that no girl is prevented from attending school because they were simply on their period,” says Josh Kaplan founder and Joint CEO of OneSpark.

Every little bit helps. We rise by lifting others. We rise together.
