A bumper weekend for DP World and South African cricket

The past weekend was one for the history books for DP World and South African cricket, with Sunday 2 April featuring both the celebration of ‘Pink Day’ at the DP World Wanderers Stadium, and an impressive win by the DP World Lions women’s team against the Six Gun Grill Western Province team in the Women’s Provincial T20 tournament final.

At ‘Pink Day’, the Proteas delivered a resounding win against the Netherlands in the Betway Pink ODI. Both teams – along with thousands of fans – ‘pitched up in pink’ in support of breast cancer awareness, education, early detection treatment and research.

For the sixth year running, the beneficiary of funds raised through this event was the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital Breast Care Unit. The total raised was over R1 million (~USD54,000) and included R100 000 (~USD5,400) donated by DP World. All proceeds raised will be used to fund important breast cancer research.

DP World was also honoured to receive the host union trophy from Cricket South Africa on behalf of the DP World Wanderers Stadium, in recognition of hosting this iconic international match. Esha Mansingh, Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Investor Relations at Imperial, a DP World Company, accepted the trophy on behalf of the DP World Wanderers Stadium and said: “We are proud to see the multi-use DP World Wanderers Stadium hosting important events such as Pink Day – a hallmark event in the cricketing world calendar, and one that makes a continued valuable contribution to an important cause that is close to the hearts of many South Africans.

“Another special moment on Sunday was celebrating the DP World Lions Women’s cricket team who won the Provincial T20 tournament. We have supported this team since 2020, first as Imperial and now as DP World, as part of our commitment to uplifting talented women in sport and equipping them with the necessary tools to grow and shine as world class players. We are so proud to follow the journey of the DP World Lions Women’s cricket team and to see talented players grow into role models for women’s sport in Africa.”

Jono Leaf-Wright, CEO: Central Gauteng Lions, said: “When you work as hard and as smart as this team and its support colleagues, you will be rewarded with victory. On behalf of the Lions Cricket family, I congratulate and thank the team and their coaches for their professionalism and absolute determination right from the first ball bowled this season. The DP World Lions team is a very special group of players both on and off the field, and I am really excited for the women’s game moving forward as we all strive to raise the standards of excellence season upon season.”

Kirstie Thomson, DP World Lions cricket player, who had a great match with 34 runs from 28 balls, said: “On behalf of the Lions women’s team, I would like to thank DP World for supporting us this season and allowing us to proudly show off the brand as we took to the field each time. We have been backed by incredible sponsors, our home ground is the world class DP World Wanderers Stadium, and we can sense the genuine care and support from everyone involved.”

DP World announced its sponsorship of the DP World Gauteng Lions men’s and women’s cricket teams, along with the naming rights of the DP World Wanderers Stadium, in October last year. This partnership marked a milestone in realising our ambition to build our international reputation and inspire the next generation, and is representative of our commitment to the advancement of sport across the African continent.
