SAMSA continues to monitor a fishing vessel that ran aground on Saturday night one mile from Port St Francis

The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) continues to monitor the fishing vessel that ran aground on Saturday night at approximately 22h30, one mile from Port St Francis.

The vessel had 24 crew members who were all brought to safety after they abandoned the vessel.

The salvage tug Umkhuseli is on the scene and absorbent materials have been dispersed inside the vessel to absorb pollutants and enable divers to enter the vessel.

SAMSA has also activated the Incident Management System (IMS) Structure as contained in the National oil spill contingency plan for responding to this casualty. The IMS structure includes environmental management organisations.
The vessel is laden with 35 tonnes of diesel and lubricants and is still fast aground in a rocky part of the coast 1 mile off Porte St Francis.

The salvage work, which will include pumping out the diesel, will proceed once it is safe to board the vessel as the area has been experiencing high swells since yesterday.
