As we gear up for the holiday season, with the Easter weekend upon us, it is important to be well-informed and empowered to make safe choices during this festive period.
This is the number one tip provided by Nkazi Sokhulu, CEO of iWYZE, a leader in non-life insurance underwritten by Old Mutual Insure, as South Africans prepare to leave their homes and travel to visit friends and family and take advantage of the upcoming long weekends.
“It’s about making wise choices and committing to #stayingsafe this holiday, whether you are on the road, at your home or in life,” says Sokhulu, adding that every year at this time there’s usually a significant increase in traffic on our national roads, and unfortunately, South Africa has a history of tragic accidents during this holiday period.
Last year, during the Easter long weekend, approximately 225 lives were lost in 185 accidents on the country’s roads. With pedestrians accounting for 44.4% of these fatalities, passengers at 27.7%, drivers at 25.6%, and cyclists at just 1.3%.

Going on a road trip
Start your journey with well-maintained tyres. Ensure your tyres are in good condition for safe driving on the roads and to reduce the potential of accidents.
By adjusting your driving habits, you can significantly decrease the likelihood of road accidents. Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and avoid sudden lane changes.
One of the best ways to stay safe on the road during the holidays is to ensure your vehicle is in top condition. Regular maintenance checks can prevent breakdowns and accidents.
Prioritising safety at home
To prevent home fires effectively, it’s essential to practice safe braai etiquette and keep a fire extinguisher readily available. Did you know that braai fires contribute to numerous home fires annually? Also, don’t forget to check your smoke detectors before the holiday rush.
Set timers or turn on your lights at specific times, creating the illusion of someone being home. Securing your home with proper lighting and alarms can deter burglars, you could also consider installing motion-detecting lights outside your home for added security.
When travelling, you could also secure your home by asking a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property.
Never to share your holiday plans on social media. Sharing your plans online can inadvertently alert potential intruders of an empty home.
