It’s nuts, below the belt and it’s happening on 31 October
With this year’s bold tagline, “Make your ballsiest move yet,” the Hollard Daredevil Run continues to push boundaries in the fight against prostate and testicular cancers. This annual awareness campaign invites men to run 5km wearing nothing but a purple Speedo – sparking conversations, challenging stigmas and encouraging early detection through testing to deal with life’s unsures. More than just a run, this initiative is a powerful movement that gets people talking, testing and taking action. This year, it is taking place on Friday, 31 October.
The official launch of the 2025 Hollard Daredevil Run took place today at Hollard Campus in Parktown, Joburg, where funds raised from the 2024 event were formally handed over to our partners in the fight against male cancers – the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) as well as the Prostate Cancer Foundation. With 2024 being yet another record-breaking year, with more Daredevils taking to the streets around the country than ever before, approximately R780 000 was raised. Hollard is topping this amount up to bring it to a total of R1 million which will be used to increase awareness, reducing uncertainty around cancer testing, especially in areas that don’t often have access to essential screening that can save lives.
“As a nation, sport is in our blood, if we are that passionate about it, we can be equally passionate about our health” says Hazel Chimhandamba, Group Chief Marketing Officer at Hollard. “But just imagine if society paid the same passion and attention to, understanding the risks of prostate and testicular cancers” Chimhandamba explains that this is why Hollard Daredevil Run is such a powerful platform. “It raises awareness in a fun and engaging way sparking dialogue about men’s health in a non-threatening way. For Hollard, we are always optimistic and strongly believe that through increased awareness we can make a positive impact on early detection,” she added.
First launched sixteen years ago, the Hollard Daredevil Run features a main event at Zoo Lake in Jozi, along with smaller runs in neighbourhoods, schools and universities nationwide.
Prostate cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in South African men. According to South Africa’s National Cancer Registry, 1 in 15 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. International data shows that about 1 in 4 Black men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer versus 1 in 8 white males.
Although less widespread overall, testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men aged 15 to 35, affecting approximately 1 in every 2000 males. A simple one-minute shower self-examination to check for lumps, swelling, or changes in the testicles can save a young man’s life by promoting early detection of testicular cancer, which is highly treatable when caught early.
The annual Zoo Lake event in Joburg will be taking place on Friday 31 October at 3pm, while participants in locations throughout the country can register to run on their own or in groups with friends, family, or colleagues anywhere in the country.
